The Carltun Story
The Carltun is located on 26 acres situated between three golf courses in Eisenhower Park which has in excess of 1,000 acres of land and is larger than Central Park.
When Robert Moses planned the building, the United States was in the midst of the Korean War, and the building was built to bomb shelter specifications. For example, the foundation walls are 12" reinforced concrete and the roof of the building is constructed of 12" steel I-beams. On these I-beams are 8" thick reinforced tongue and groove reinforced concrete planking. The roof is covered with slate from a quarry that was later identified as coming from New Hampshire. The cornerstone (still seen to the right of the front entrance) set in 1955, the building was completed in early 1956.
Many of the current dining and other rooms did not operate or exist in 1954. The north of the building where the Gatsby and Gold Coast rooms are located housed the men’s locker rooms for the golf course. The current wine cellar was used as a meeting room for groups such as Girl and Boy Scout meetings. The Havana Cigar Club was used later as the offices of the Nassau County Credit Union.
Situated in the midst of three beautiful golf courses, The Carltun took over its current location in July 1995. Under the supervision of owner, Anthony A. Capetola, the building was completely transformed, the kentile floors, knotty pine walls and the 1950's motif that Robert Moses and the early operators installed were eliminated and Long Island’s most beautiful gold coast mansion began to take form.
Working 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, the first floor of The Carltun was transformed and opened on December 1, 1995, with the Palm Court, Tap Room, Gallery, Ballroom and Drawing Room receiving rave reviews for decor (Carltun has consistently been rated #1 for decor by Zagats). In 1997, Capetola converted the second floor to the Havana Cigar Club and the Secret Dining Room, and in 1998, converted a downstairs area to “The Wine Cellar”. In 2004, The Carltun extended its lease and converted the north end of the building to the Gatsby Room and “The Clubhouse”. The Gatsby Room is replete with Murano crystal chandeliers and evokes the feeling of the Gatsby era.
In early 2013, the Clubhouse was remodeled to the Gold Coast Room to mirror the decor of the Gatsby Room and provide a 100 seat alternative to the Grand Ballroom which accommodates larger parties. The Carltun consists of some 85,000 square feet of space operating on three floors with rooms that accommodate all sizes and is in pristine condition with constant updates and renovations of the landscaping, bathrooms and all public and private areas. The Capetola family continues to run the restaurant and its catering facilities. We hope these years of experience, combined with our sincere desire to serve you successfully will provide a unique treat for you at the various rooms at The Carltun for ala carte or banquet dining.
